Research and medical support:

Professor Chris Oliver, who led the Birmingham research team and reported back regularly to families.

Work began In January 2000 on the research project by Birmingham University into self-injurious behaviour among people with CdLS.

The project is funded by a grant over three years of £86,782 by The Community Fund (formerly the National Lottery Charities Board.)

During the year a number of findings generated by the research have been published in medical literature and the Foundation remains confident that when the project finishes in January next year there will be real benefits gained from our knowledge about behaviour in CdLS and for some interventions that will ease problems for our membership.

Professor Oliver will be reporting on the findings at the CdLS International conference in Sydney Australia in July 2003.

Work continued at Newcastle in the search for the gene that causes CdLS, but without success.

Severe funding problems mean the project may have to be halted. At the time of preparing this report, we were awaiting news of a possible grant to save the project and take it to new areas.
