ASP THE FAMILY

Families from all over the UK and Ireland came to the Holiday Inn at Telford to meet professionals and other families and to hear the latest findings about the syndrome.

As well as making use of the hotel’s wonderful leisure facilities and visiting Telford’s famous tourist spots the families enjoyed a disco with a buffet and talked to each other about some of the challenges faced.

Several first-time families turned up nervous and left determined to come again to the next meeting in Edinburgh.

For the kids, there was also a chance to let of steam and dance!

Snakes Alive! (and spiders, tree frogs, toads and chameleons).

While it is normally just the Foundation trustees that look a little slithery at the CdLS family days, the meeting at Telford became a mini zoo thanks to the help of Animal Man.

Host family Richard and Adele Simmonds had arranged for the Animal Man to provide a bit of light entertainment after the AGM.

Instead of families screaming the house down there was a fascination as he pulled out different creatures from his collection and introduced them to the families.

CdLS youngsters and their siblings were quite contentedly stroking tarantulas or wearing pythons like a scarf.

Adele said she was relieved when the Animal man left with as many creatures as he came with.

“It was fantastic seeing the youngsters so confident with the spiders and the snakes – even the mums and dads slowly got round to the idea.

Telford mp pledges to help raise the profile of cdls

Telford’s MP David Wright – an old school friend of Richard Simmonds – welcomed families to the Telford area.

He also pledged to speak for the Foundation in Parliament.
David spoke about the value of support organisations and the importance of having our voice heard. He took time to visit the crèche and talk to families.

He was also on hand to join in the cheque presentation for more than a thousand pounds from Corus. Craig Ryder (featured in the last issue of Reaching Out) works with the company at their plant near Wolverhampton.

Corus were also thanked at the AGM – held on the Sunday of the meeting – as one of our corporate supporters. Chairman Alan Peaford said how important it was that we brought more corporate support to the Foundation.

A full Annual Report is being distributed to members in September.
